The burial of Okey Isima, member of the 1980 squad that won the first
ever Africa Cup of Nations trophy for Nigeria has been scheduled to
hold in April. Okey Isima died early last month after a brief illness.
The late Green eagle star left United States for his mother land before
passing on to the World beyond.
Former Super Eagles midfielder, now special adviser on sports to Governor Peter Obi of Anambra state, Arthur Ebunam, disclosed that plans are on by ex- Eagles players in the US to organise a befitting burial for their team mate, friend, and colleague. He also disclosed that some of them will be back home for the burial.
Arthur Ebunam, while expressing his condolence, said “It is very painful that Nigeria is losing yet another ex- footballer, Okey Isima, a man that has done this country proud on both local and international scene. Okey is somebody I know very well, we started life together as players, played for different clubs in Nigeria including the senior national team the Green Eagles ever before travelling to the States.
Right there in the US, we never left each other, until he decided to return home. So when the news of his death came to me, I could not believe my ears. I was in shock for days. He is somebody that cannot be forgotten so soon by friends, brothers and colleagues. But people would say life goes on brother,” he added.
Okey will be buried on April 27, 2013 in his home town of Nsugbe, Anambra state. The date is so chosen to make room for every necessary arrangement to be put in place.
“As a friend, I can reliably tell you that the family of Isima has decided on April 27 as the date for the burial. His younger brother told me this in confidence before he left for his base in South Africa. He said they decided to pick April 27 so that they can have enough time to prepare for it, adding that the family, friends and well wishers, made up their mind to give the former footballer star a good burial as the last respect they can give to their friend and colleague.” He said that they have also written the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) notifying them of the burial date and plan.
