I say this as a Pan Africanist who believes totally in One Nigeria, former life-long siddon look Nigerian. I say this as a proud Nigerian . I speak as someone who knows it’s time to forget tribal loyalty, party loyalty, ideology and pride and put the country first.
Jonathan is our last best chance. He’s worth laying it all on the line for.
Where many leaders are two-faced; publicly kindly but privately feared and/or hated by people closest to them, Jonathan is consistent in the way he treats people, consistently kind and personally humble. He lives by the code that those who lead must serve. He believes that. He lives it. He lived it long before he was in the public eye.

4,000 Homes Threatened, Wildfire Rips Through California;

A raging southern California wildfire that has nearly tripled in size as it threatened nearly 4,000 homes.

Cooler temperatures and higher humidity were helping efforts against the fire, and firefighters said on Saturday they had contained 30 percent of the blaze, which erupted on Thursday near Malibu, 65km west of Los Angeles.

Firefighters are hoping light rain forecast for Sunday and heavier precipitation expected for Monday and Tuesday could help in battling what authorities are calling the Springs Fire.

The Springs Fire grew to 11,330 hectares from 4,040 hectares on Friday morning.

Aerial operations resumed at daybreak after stopping overnight, the Ventura County Fire Department (VCFD) said on its Facebook page, adding that ground crews had continued battling the blaze without interruption.

About 1,900 firefighters had gathered to battle the wind-fanned flames that have ripped through tinder-dry brush, the VCFD said, a nearly two-fold increase in personnel from Friday.

The department said the inferno threatened 4,000 homes, but by Saturday morning, just 15 homes had been damaged and none destroyed.

JAMB: How Candidates Used Customised T-shirts And paid N5,000 – N20,000 to cheat

 

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB said yesterday that only 10 candidates scored 300 marks and above in the last Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, in the country even as some candidates printed customised shirts and T-shirts where anticipated answers were prepared to cheat during the examination. JAMB Registrar, Professor, ‘Dibu Ojerinde who made this known in Abuja while addressing newsmen said that 40 centres were involved in cheating during the examination, where some candidates paid between N5,000 and N20,000 to be allowed to cheat.

He however, said that JAMB was investigating the centres where malpractices took place, pointing out that those 40 centres might be barred from future UTME if found guilty. He also noted that he did not wish to pre-empt the sanctions to be applied until investigations were concluded.

According to Ojerinde, apart from the 10 candidates who scored above 300 marks, 628 others scored between 270 – 299; 33,115 scored 250 – 269: 704,622 scored 200 and above while 801,804 scored below 200.

He also said that the board recorded 40,692 invalid results due to multiple shading or no shading at all by candidates while the examination was successfully conducted in 3,168 centres.

Ojerinde further said that 1,629,102 candidates applied to sit for the Paper Pencil Test, PPT, while 15,508 candidates applied for the Dual Based Test, DBT bringing the total of candidates to 1,644,110. Out of this figure, 47,974 were absent.

A breakdown of the number of the candidates that sat for the UTME showed that 1,670,833 applied to go to the universities while 28,977 and 28,445 chose Polytechnics and Colleges of Education respectively even as only 25 chose the newly established Innovative Enterprises Institutes.

Innovative Enterprises Institutes according to him, are institutions where skills acquisition are their mandates.

Speaking further, he noted that the result of 78,309 candidates from various centres were at present, undergoing screening to ascertain their culpability in malpractices, while 12,110 candidates’ results were being withheld for possible disciplinary action.

On the candidates who printed special T-shirts and shirts with prepared answers, he regretted that candidates for the UTME had always devised new methods of cheating on yearly basis. The Registrar stressed that the examination cheats had graduated from using ‘’magic slippers’’ to customised T-shirts and shirts in which anticipated answers were imprinted in the sleeves as well as inside the T-shirts.

“Details of the results in order of merit according to courses and institutions of choice of candidates will be dispatched to universities, polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of education and innovative enterprises institutes at the appropriate time for the purposes of 2013/2014 admissions.

“It is the policy of the board to ensure that equal opportunity is given to all candidates seeking placement in the nation’s tertiary institutions regardless of their physical status. We will continue to appeal to stakeholders to show more interest in the acquisition of higher education by this category of citizens.

“The board hereby reminds everybody that it has implemented the Federal Government’s policy which stipulates that all candidates seeking admissions into the universities, polytechnics, monotechnics, colleges of education and Innovative Enterprises Institutes, Police Academy and the Nigerian Defence Academy, NDA, must sit for the UTME being conducted by the JAMB.

“The board will continue to appeal to the various state governments concerned to provide their indigenes with enough capacity building programmes that would allow them apply directly to the board so as to compete favourably with their counterparts in other states of the federation. Let me once again state that candidates are allowed to change their choices of institutions and courses only once,’’ he added, noting that the change of institutions must be effected before May 17, 2013, or two weeks from yesterday.

Ojerinde stressed that the Computer Based Test, CBT would hold from Saturday, May 18, 2013, to June 1, 2013 and requested candidates to ensure that they reprint their e-registration slips afresh so as to be sure of their centres.

ACF Begs Boko Haram Sect To Set Monguno Free, As Family Denies News Of Release

Amidst swirling rumors that elderstateman, Ali Shettima Monguno has been released by kidnappers, Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF), Northern Nigeria’s influential political and cultural association, has begged Boko Haram, suspected to be behind today’s kidnapping of Alhaji Shettima Ali Monguno, to set him free.

In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Anthony Sani, the Forum described the abduction as unjustifiable and an act of wickedness.
“The forum is very sad because given the age of the elder statesman and his services to not only Borno state but the whole country, he is not expected to be subjected to such hardship and humiliation by any group,be it sectarian or men of the underworld,” the statement said.

ACF expressed the view that if Boko Haram is truly responsible for the kidnapping, with the objective of pressing for the release of their members detained by the authorities, it has adopted the wrong approach.  Instead, it said, the sect should use the mechanism of dialogue put in place by the government and not resort to causing the old man untold hardship.

“The kidnappers should therefore heed public appeals and release Alhaji Shettima Ali Monguno forthwith in the interest of humanity and peace dearly needed for meaningful socio economic and political development of not only Borno state but the whole country,” ACF advised.
It called on the people of Borno State to keep calm and not take the law into their own hands as the federal and state governments try to bring to an end the culture of violence not only in Borno and Yobe states but throughout Nigeria.

Alhaji Munguno was seized this afternoon as he completed Friday worship.  His abduction confirms a warning last week by the Joint Task Force in Borno State that Boko Haram has established a kidnapping outfit.  By kidnapping a widely-known Muslim leader, however, the sect now further calls into question its own claim that it is fighting on behalf of Islam, and divides Nigeria’s Muslim population even more.

NSCDC Inspector Arrested For Posting Married Lover’s Randy Picture On Facebook

 

The nefarious use of social media once again came to the fore when a Senior Inspector in the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Mr Bayo Onifade, of the Oyo State Command, was arrested by the police for posting a unclad picture of his mistress on Facebook after their relationship turned sour.

Information Nigeria learnt that Onifade and the married woman began their secret love affair in December last year in Saki, a major town in the northern part of Oyo State and while the relationship lasted, Onifade was said to have taken his lover to a location in the town where he took unclad photographs of his lover.

However, following a decision by the 27-year old mother of two to end the unholy relationship in March, Onifade allegedly decided to post the unclad photo on Facebook after his pleas with her for the affair to continue fell on deaf ears.

Facebook users close to the woman’s husband were said to have seen the photo and drawn his attention to it; a development that made him kick his wife out of their matrimonial home.

Onifade, 32, has since been arrested by police for defamation of character and indecent assault of the woman.

The incident was confirmed by the state NSCDC Public Relations Officer (PRO) , Mr Olusegun Oluwole, who said that Onifade has been suspended pending resolution of the case.

A Deaf Man Beats His Baby To Death Because She Won’t Stop Crying

 

Police said a father beat his baby to death when the child wouldn’t stop crying — even though the man was deaf. Hector Rene Cupich-Quinones, 35, and his wife, 37-year-old Maria Guadalupe Zuniga, have both been charged in the beating death of their 5-month old daughter. Both parents are deaf and are unable to speak. Police said Cupich-Quinones confessed, through the aid of an interpreter, that he killed the infant girl. He allegedly stated that Saturday night, he and his wife had been drinking and became frustrated when their infant daughter kept crying. Investigators said the man admitted to first shaking the baby to get her to be quiet, and when that didn’t work, hitting her head on the counter. “My understanding is [the parents] feel vibrations and some noise,” police Sgt. Kevin Perlich said, according to Dallas News, “so they could tell the infant was crying.” Cupich-Quinones told investigators the baby fell head-first onto the floor after he allegedly slid her across the counter. He stated Zuniga then put the girl to bed, but at 3 a.m. Sunday, they noticed the baby was having trouble breathing and called 911 at around 5:30 a.m. Investigators said Cupich-Quinones told them he and his wife got into an argument about who was responsible before they called authorities. The baby was transported to a hospital and died at about 10 p.m. Authorities said she had massive trauma to the back of her head, as well as bruises on her chest, arms and back. “We’re talking a lot of blunt force trauma injuries.’ Cupich-Quinones is charged with murder, while Zuniga is charged with injury to a child. Share JAMB Releases 2013 UTME Results: Only Ten Candidates Score 300 Marks And Above

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the 2013 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) results.

The board, however, withheld 12,110 results for possible disciplinary action.

The Registrar of JAMB, Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, announced this at a news conference on the release of the results in Bwari, FCT, on Friday.

The registrar said after thorough processing of answer scripts of the candidates who sat for the examination, the board discovered some forms of malpractice perpetuated during the conduct of the examination.

“However, the results of 68,309 candidates from various centres are undergoing further screening to ascertain the culpability of 12,110 candidates’ results.”

A total of 1,629,102 candidates applied to sit for the Paper Pencil Test (PPT), while 15,008 candidates applied for the Dual Based Test, bringing the number of candidates  to 1,644,110.

“The general performance of candidates in this year’s examination shows remarkable improvement compared with last year.

“Ten candidates scored 300 marks and above, while 127,017 candidates scored between 1-159 marks.

“About 40,692 candidates’ results were invalid due to either multiple shading or no shading at all.  After processing all the results, the board also discovered that about 47,974 candidates were absent.”

The registrar assured the candidates that their results could be accessed on the JAMB Website: www.myjambresult.com using their registration numbers.

He said about 40 centres would be screened to ascertain their culpability and warned the public against Internet fraudsters.

“Information reaching JAMB shows Internet fraudsters are already telling candidates that their results could be upgraded in one form or the other.”

This is pure deceit, the public and candidates are hereby advised to disregard these fraudsters since they do not have access to our data.

“Let me once again state that candidates are allowed to change their choices of institutions and courses once only, this change has to be effected within two weeks from today.”

Ojerinde said the Computer Based Test (CBT) is scheduled to take place from May 18 to June 1 and appealed to candidates to reprint their e-registration slips afresh to further ascertain their CBT centres. (NAN)
