Obama stakes second term on progressive goals

Published on February 13, 2013 by   ·   No Comments
WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama on Tuesday staked his second term on an ambitious bid to mend America, pledging to narrow inequality, reignite the economy, fight gun crime and fix immigration.
Anchoring his annual State of the Union address on domestic priorities, Obama dealt only in passing with churning foreign policy crises, including North Korea’s recent nuclear test and Iran’s controversial atomic program.
Closing in on his goal of ending an era of draining US wars abroad, Obama announced plans to halve US troop numbers in Afghanistan within a year, while vowing that the global pursuit of terror would go on.
He also struck a note of optimism in counseling middle class Americans still gripped by economic angst.
“Together, we have cleared away the rubble of crisis, and can say with renewed confidence that the state of our union is stronger,” Obama said, in a speech punctuated by 23 standing ovations in the House of Representatives.

The address, before a huge national audience, was Obama’s best chance to sell his second-term plans to a divided nation and to stave off the domestic lame duck status all second-term presidents dread.
Obama called for fixing the gaping budget deficit, but described billions of dollars in automatic spending cuts due March 1 as “a really bad idea.”
In an address steeped in progressive ideology, he slammed Republican ideas of adjusting retirement benefits and health care for seniors as “even worse.”
“A growing economy that creates good, middle-class jobs — that must be the North Star that guides our efforts,” Obama said, seeking to turn election vows that everyone should get a “fair shot” into reality.
Obama’s message was unapologetically tailored to a domestic American audience, as he insisted that government investment must bankroll jobs growth.
“He will be about revitalizing the middle class and (easing) a sense of insecurity that has swept through much of the nation,” said Princeton University professor Julian Zelizer.
But Republicans wasted no time in trying to thwart Obama’s plans.
“President Obama? He believes … that the economic downturn happened because our government didn’t tax enough, spend enough and control enough,” said rising star Senator Marco Rubio, giving the Republican rebuttal speech.
“As you heard tonight, his solution to virtually every problem we face is for Washington to tax more, borrow more and spend more.”
Obama’s reflex instinct for compromise has ebbed after years of partisan warfare.
Now he seems intent on leveraging political capital won with his re-election to force his will in Congress, banking on the idea that Republicans will pay the price for standing in the way of ideas voters support.
Obama was at his most passionate when making the case for measures to stem gun violence, following the shocking massacre of 20 kids at a Connecticut elementary school in December.
“If you want to vote no, that’s your choice,” he cried, drawing lawmakers to their feet in an emotional tribute to victims of gun crime.
“These proposals deserve a vote.”
Looking on in the House gallery were the parents of Hadiya Pendleton, a teenager killed in a random shooting not far from the president’s Chicago home days after she took part in his inaugural parade.
In a keenly awaited move, Obama announced the return of 34,000 of the 66,000 US troops in Afghanistan by next February, ahead of a full withdrawal in 2014.
“This drawdown will continue. And by the end of next year, our war in Afghanistan will be over,” he said.
In a brief diversion abroad, Obama said North Korea’s nuclear test Tuesday would only further its isolation, and promised to stand by Asian allies, strengthen missile defense and lead the world in a firm response.
Obama said “Iran must recognize that now is the time for a diplomatic solution,” ahead of new talks with world powers this month on Tehran’s nuclear program, which Western nations and Israel believe is aimed at developing nuclear weapons but Iran defends as entirely peaceful.
Arguing Al-Qaeda was a “shadow” of its former self, Obama pledged to help nations like Yemen, Libya, and Somalia provide for their own security, and to aid allies like France, which is fighting extremists in Mali.
Breaking new ground, Obama announced the start of formal talks between the United States and the European Union on a trans-Atlantic trade pact and previewed a new plan to thwart cyber attacks on US infrastructure.
Despite criticism he ignored the slaughter of nearly 70,000 people in Syria, Obama pledged to keep up pressure on Bashar al-Assad’s regime and said he would stand firm in defense of Israel, which he will visit next month.
He also tried to shame Congress into action on climate change.
“We can choose to believe in the overwhelming judgment of science — and act before it’s too late,” Obama said.
Domestically, Obama said he wanted a bill to reform the broken immigration system to give illegal immigrants a path to citizenship within months — the one area where bipartisan compromise seems likely.
Back in campaign mode, Obama will travel to North Carolina, Georgia and his hometown of Chicago to sell his speech this week

Majek Fashek: I’m Not Sick

Majek Fashek

Nigeria’s reggae music star, Majek Fashek, who was recently rumoured to be having medical and mental challenges, has claimed that he is not sick.
The Rainmaker was rumoured to have gone berserk, and was chained down at his Gowon Estate, Ipaja, Lagos residence by concerned neighbours, especially when he gets out of control.
It was also reported that Majek now walks around talking to himself and sometimes sits at a bus stop around his area playing his guitar while kids make fun of him. But the musician has denied it all, reiterating that he is mentally and medically balanced.
Speaking with P.M.NEWS on phone yesterday, Majek said he doesn’t know where the rumour about his purported ill health emanated from.
He described the development as the handiwork of idle people who are bent on making issue out of nothing.
“I’m okay. Whoever says that I’m not okay is actually the one that should check himself. As for me, I have become an Orisha (semi-god) so nothing can happen to me. I know what I’m doing,” Majek said one phone.
Earlier in the day, while speaking to P.M.NEWS reporter, Majek’s Personal Assistant and Media Manager, MC Morris, debunked the rumour of the musician’s failing health.
“Don’t mind those people saying rubbish; baba (Majek) is okay. I was still with him yesterday. When I get to his place today, I will put you through to him on phone.”
During a recent interview with P.M.NEWS reporter, Majek, whose real names are Majekodunmi Fasheki, said: “See, people must talk. But they make you more popular; that is the truth. You cannot fight the press, you cannot fight the media. They are the ones that will tell the people what is going on, so I cannot fight the media.”
He further talked about Gangster Raster, the new album he is currently working on. The album, in the words of Majek, is expected to resuscitate his dwindling music career.
“It’s a new ace which someone like Ras Kimono cannot do. Kimono is my boy. I produced him and Victor Essiet and a whole lot of others. What I’m saying is that my new album is not in Kimono’s level; I’m on a higher level just like Michael Jackson and James Brown who was a master to Fela Kuti.”
Majek further said that he and MC Morris now have a company called Underground System Records. The company, which he claimed is already registered in Los Angeles, California, was created because of young musicians.
“Morris is close to the young ones like Tuface and Wizkid, and I’m happy to see them shine. We intend to register the company here as well and use it as a platform to get the youths out of the streets and criminality. I’m an American citizen. I may decide to go back there now because my wife and children are there. But I’m here because Nigerians are suffering and there is nobody to speak for them. Fela is gone, and Femi cannot do it because he is weak. I fear nobody because I’m a gangster…”
Majek is convinced that he is back in Nigeria to lead a revolution, because according to him, it takes a revolution to make a solution.
“There are many kinds of revolution. There is bloody revolution, but we don’t want that for Nigerians. What Nigerians need is a tactful revolution, so that we won’t shed human blood. What we want is revolution of freedom. Like Bob Marley said, “emancipate your self from mental slavery… That is the revolution I’m working on. I have a temple and shrine, and everyday, I pray against bloodshed among my people.

A Nigerian bank and a police post were attacked by bandits overnight in Ode-Omu, Gbongan in Nigeria’s State of Osun.

The hoodlums escaped before the police arrived.
A passer-by, identified as Tirimisiyu, was hit by a stray bullet and died before he could get medical attention.

She said the police had intensified efforts to arrest the robbers and had also begun investigation into the incident.

Man Punches Woman To Death

A 27-year old man,  Sholanke Yusuf has landed in trouble after he allegedly punched a 55-year old woman, Nwankpa Ego, for abusing him.  And she collapsed and died in Lagos State, southwest Nigeria.
He is now facing a  murder charge at Magistrate’s Court  Lagos under the Criminal Code.
Yusuf, who is now in prison custody at Ikoyi, reportedly landed a vicious blow on late Ego’s nose for abusing him during a quarrel.
The incident happened at about 9.00 p. m at Olufowobi street, Itire, Lagos where both the defendant and the victim reside.
P.M.NEWS gathered the woman was seriously injured and she started bleeding and later slumped. Before she was rushed to a hospital she was already dead.
She was merely certified dead at the hospital by the doctor and her body was deposited at Isolo  mortuary for autopsy.
Yusuf was arrested and charged to court for murder and his plea was not taken.
