Etisalat man ‘Saka’ moves to MTN in N20m coup

If you watch TV regularly, you must have come across Nigerian actor Hafiz Oyetoro popularly called Saka.
The actor who easily switches from English to Yoruba movies, drama series and sitcoms is also popularly known for his roles in advertor campaigns from telecommunications company Etisalat.
But Saka seems to have changed camps and pitched his tent with rival company, telecoms giant MTN. A new MTN ad campaign tells us so.
MTN has kicked off their television commercial for the recently activated Number Portability Scheme with Saka gladly announcing he has ‘upgraded’ to MTN.
The ad starts with Saka dressed in green traditional attire only to transform into a bright yellow attire as he leads a music band.
I don port o, I don port go MTN. I don upgrade to MTN‘, Saka sings and dances.
Advertising doesn’t get more brutal than this, picture a popular face of a big brand, announcing to millions of consumers that he’s switching camps and advising them to do so too!
Some are of the opinion that MTN made the desperate move, making Saka jump ship because the recently launched ‘number portability scheme’ might not favour them. MTN has often received a lot of black lash from consumers on Social media who have promised to leave the network once the scheme is launched. As we speak a bloggers forum is contemplating on creating a ‘migrate away from MTN’ campaign.
Saka, sources say, got paid a mouth watering N20m. Who would resist the offer? Many questions however trail the move; didn’t Saka have an exclusive contract with Etisalat or was he being paid per campaign?
While Etisalat cannot but face a minor setback before of course launching their own campaign (maybe hire MTN ambassadors Osuofia and Mama G?), MTN will relish the moment. Saka however comes out as the biggest winner walking home with millions of cash and the hype…
