Phil Neville is being lined up for a role in new United boss David Moyes’ backroom set-up.
A potential departure to Wigan for Rene Meulensteen is opening the door for his return with Moyes in the process of shaking up Sir Alex Ferguson’s management team.
Fergie’s former right-hand man Mike Phelan and goalkeeping coach Eric Steele have already departed.
First-team coach Meulensteen is thought to have been offered a youth team role in Moyes’ new set-up.
However, the 49-year-old is a candidate for the vacant manager’s job at Wigan, created by Roberto Martinez’s exit to replace Moyes at Everton.
Wigan chairman Dave Whelan has 30 applicants for the role and will start job interviews on Monday.
Phelan has also been linked with the DW Stadium post and could even team up again with Meulensteen.
The potential departure of the Dutch strategist is the key to Neville opening a second chapter of his Old Trafford career.
He left in August 2005 for a fee of £3.5m and, in eight years at Goodison, became Moyes’ mouthpiece on the pitch and in the dressing room.
Neville, 36, is currently undertaking his first major coaching job with Stuart Pearce’s Under-21s at the European Championships in Israel, having quit Everton.
Moyes’ former Everton assistants Jimmy Lumsden and Steve Round and goalkeeper coach Chris Woods are expected to join him at Old Trafford.
