A teacher shot at a pupil in a school premises on Saturday morning in
Shinas, 250km north to Muscat, and then surrendered at the police
station.
The Royal Oman Police (ROP) confirmed the incident.
“The incident is under investigation and once the probe is over will issue a detailed statement,” a spokesman for the ROP said.
Witness Al Mohib Al Saadi said that the suspect, Abdulaziz Al
Maamari, went to Saad Bin Abi Waqas Secondary School and asked to see
the student Abdul Aziz Al Balushi.
Al Maamari reportedly told Al Balushi’s teacher, Hilal Al Rubai, that
he is a relative of the student. Al Maamari teaches at a different
school, Al Saadi said.
“As soon as Al Rubaie brought the boy down from the class room, Al
Maamari fired one shot from his 9mm revolver that hit Al Balushi in the
stomach,” Al Saadi said.
While the school authorities attended to the injured boy and moved
him to the Shinas hospital, the suspect went to the Shinas Police
Station and surrendered.
Another source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that it was a matter of honour for the teacher.
Al Maamari believed that Al Balushi had abused his eight-year-old
son, who is undergoing treatment at a hospital. It is also believed that
the eight-year-old boy was also injected with drugs after being abused.
Meanwhile, a source from Shinas Hospital said that the bullet was
extracted from Al Balushi’s stomach and once he was stable he was
transferred to Sohar Hospital. [GN]
